As part of our ongoing commitment to community outreach and conservation, Titley Scientific was proud to support the 2025 World Science Festival Brisbane through our equipment loan program. We provided two Anabat Walkabouts and one Scout detector to wildlife ecologist Dr Elizabeth Williams, who led two sold-out “Meet the Microbats” nocturnal walk-and-talk events at Mt Coot-tha.
These events invited the public to explore the rich biodiversity of microbats within an urban environment. Attendees used Titley Scientific’s bat detectors to listen in on the ultrasonic calls of insectivorous bats as they flitted through the night air along the paths beside West Ithaca Creek. In total, seven microbat species were identified from the recordings made during the walks.
Dr Williams educated participants about the crucial ecological roles of microbats—including their role in natural pest control, consuming thousands of insects each night—and encouraged practical conservation actions such as preserving hollow-bearing trees or installing bat boxes.
The walks also helped dispel common myths about bats, replacing fear with fascination and understanding. Public events like these are essential in building local stewardship and fostering support for microbat conservation in urban settings.
In addition to microbats, other wildlife such as the Powerful Owl, Southern Boobook, Great Barred Frog, Orange-fingered Yabby, and both Common Brushtail and Ringtail Possums were observed, enriching the experience.
We’re thrilled to see our technology used in such impactful outreach. Titley Scientific’s loan program continues to support educators and researchers around the world who are working to inspire the next generation of conservationists.
