The Anabat Express stands out as a highly reliable and user-friendly bioacoustic recorder, particularly for extended deployments. Its exceptional battery life is a highlight; the unit required only one battery change during it’s one month deployment. The interior is well designed, and incorporation of microphone storage within the unit makes the Anabat Express incredibly practical for field use. There are also excellent instructions included in the unit and helpful tutorial videos online, which streamline setup and operation. The integrated GPS functionality proves invaluable for accurate data geo-referencing, while the unit’s easy portability ensures easy transport to remote locations.
While the Anabat Express excels in hardware design and usability, a minor suggestion would be the inclusion of a loop for a cable lock, enhancing security during deployment. Shifting focus to the accompanying Titley Scientific Insight software, its analytical capabilities are strong, but the absence of a general recognizer for North American bats is a missed opportunity. Including such a feature would significantly enhance the software’s immediate usefulness for researchers, allowing for quicker preliminary analysis of collected data. Despite this, the combined package of the Anabat Express and Titley Scientific Insight offers a powerful and largely impressive solution for bat acoustic monitoring.
