IPG
Inter-Pulse Gap; the time from the end of one pulse until the start of the next pulse.
kHz
Kilohertz (frequency). The international measure of sound frequency, 1 kHz is equal to 1000 complete cycles per second. < Back to Glossary of Terms index
Knee
In FM calls, the point at which the initial frequency sweep transitions into the flatter body section. Called a knee because it visually represents a bend or corner in the call shape.
ksps
kilo samples per second, see Sample Rate
Maximum Frequency (trigger)
This is the maximum frequency that can create a triggering event. Any sound above this will not trigger a recording. Set this to the highest frequency that you expect to record from your species of interest. For general bat surveys in southern and eastern Australia, this can usually be left at the default setting (i.e. […]
Metrics
Predefined measurements useful for identification
Minimum Event Time
This is the minimum duration sound that will trigger a recording and is usually set to ensure that the shortest bat pulses are recorded. Default settings are often 1 or 2 milliseconds (ms), depending on the detector you are using. We recommended minimum event time is set to 2ms.
Minimum Frequency (trigger)
This is the minimum frequency that can create a triggering event. Any sound below this will not trigger a recording. Set this to the lowest frequency that you expect to record from your species of interest.
ms
Milliseconds. International measure of time, one one-thousandth of a second. E.g a 10 ms duration bat call lasts for one one-hundredth of a second, a 100 ms pause is one tenth of a second, and a 1000 ms sequence of calls is one second long.
N
This is not a metric, but the number of pulses detected for metrics in the file.
