Knee
In FM calls, the point at which the initial frequency sweep transitions into the flatter body section. Called a knee because it visually represents a bend or corner in the call shape.
Maximum Frequency (trigger)
This is the maximum frequency that can create a triggering event. Any sound above this will not trigger a recording. Set this to the highest frequency that you expect to record from your species of interest. For general bat surveys in southern and eastern Australia, this can usually be left at the default setting (i.e. […]
Metrics
Predefined measurements useful for identification
Minimum Event Time
This is the minimum duration sound that will trigger a recording and is usually set to ensure that the shortest bat pulses are recorded. Default settings are often 1 or 2 milliseconds (ms), depending on the detector you are using. We recommended minimum event time is set to 2ms.
Minimum Frequency (trigger)
This is the minimum frequency that can create a triggering event. Any sound below this will not trigger a recording. Set this to the lowest frequency that you expect to record from your species of interest.
Night-Only Recording Mode
The night only mode is designed for efficient deployment. This recording mode will turn the detector on 30 minutes before sunset and off 30 minutes after sunrise. This requires a GPS fix.
Off Dots
Zero crossing dots which are hidden (either manually or by a filter)
Onmidirectional microphone
Each microphone has an area of detection, the shape of this area relates to the directionality of the microphone. An omnidirectional microphone has a, more or less, spherical area of detection, whilst a directional microphone has a lobed area of detection in front of the microphone. For more information on which microphone is best for […]
Oscillogram
A visual representation of a sounds intensity (y axis) over time (x axis)
Pass
The series of pulses which are contained in a file, typically from one bat passing the microphone
