    Overall value-for-money
I reckon the Express is probably your best choice for passive bat detection in southern Australia... you can't beat the Express for its compact design, high-quality recordings and overall value-for money. Everything is built in (including a GPS to record your site location and set the clock time) and the operation literally requires just the pressing of one or two buttons. There's no need to do any sort of programming (although it is possible to do so through the Anabat Toolbox software), which can result in your plans coming unstuck if you miss a command line or get a setting wrong (as happens frequently with novice users of other detectors).

    Really easy to use
I used an Anabat Express for the first time last bat season and found it really easy to use. It also picked up some important records that I didn't get with harp traps.

Extremely easy to use, even for a novice
I was generously allowed use of two Anabat Insight detectors as part of the Titley Scientific Loan Programme for my university Masters #DevonBeachBats research project.
The Express is extremely easy to use, even for a novice. It’s easy to toggle between recording settings (timed, continuous, night-only) and the blue LED shows clearly which recording type you have set (though you do need to squint if setting in bright sunlight). I used my detectors as static detectors, recording for 30 sequential nights at two sites; impressively, I had no recording problems and so collected a full data set. I’d just caution to be sure to update all associated software and drivers before you start recording; this is the slightly more fiddly bit because Anabat Toolbox has multiple windows, some of which won’t open depending on whether you’ve connected your Express to your PC, or just connected your SD card – consequentially I did miss an update which meant one Express didn’t record on a test night…at least it was only a test night.
Updates to the Express’s software/drivers do seem to be making it incompatible with AnalookW – for reasons I never got the bottom of, AnalookW wouldn’t open or extract around half of my .zca recordings. But they worked perfectly with Anabat Insight (which is easy to use if you’re already familiar with AnalookW, and AnalookW still opens .zc files extracted through Insight).
They did get rained on – not heavily, and they were housed in security boxes – but I was relieved to find that when I opened the casings they were totally dry on the inside. They feel sturdy, aren’t too heavy to carry round – I really liked them.

    Rugged and light
I’ve been really impressed with the Anabat Express units. They are rugged and able to be left on site for extended surveys in any weather. They are light enough to suspend from the canopy, or can be attached to a tree with very little fuss. Review by Sandra P / (Posted on 12/18/2018)
